Speculation

With less than five hours to go before the grand finale, I just want to get my two cents into the public domain. International viewers waiting for their own country’s broadcast may want to skip this post now if they want to avoid spoilers for Doctor Who series 4.

The big question on everyone’s lips is, of course, “is he regenerating?” My guess is “no.” The production team like to blind-side us, I must admit. There was that mention from Ood Sigma in Planet of the Ood that the Doctor’s “song must end soon”, for one thing. It points to a regeneration sooner rather than later. On the other hand, David Tennant has been photographed on location for the Christmas special later this year. It’s a tricky one, and I don’t think Russell T. Davies and co. are above getting Tennant on set just so he can be photographed and keep the end of this series a secret. Let’s face it, they all tell terrible lies to the public at BBC Wales. Remember the interviews with Doctor Who Magazine where Davies told us how much he hated the Master as a character and would never bring him back? Or Tennants response to the rumours that Billie Piper was leaving at the end of series 2 – telling a journalist that his own contract was in doubt to divert press attention?

I think the big clue is the timing. Doctor Who is about to go on partial hiatus. In terms of keeping viewers watching, those infrequent specials next year need to be more familiar than not – this means a familiar Doctor. If there were to be a regeneration soon, it seems more likely that it will be Christmas 2009 – this leaves a public waiting for a new series the added excitement of a new Doctor as a reason to come back to the show.

But bear in mind that Donna still has something on her back, and that she has more cosmic importance than anyone hitherto expected. It could be another bifurcated timeline which needs Donna to put it back on track. In which case, we could well be given a glimpse of a Doctor whose time has not yet come…

Time will tell and Davies guards his secrets. I hope you’ll all be sat with your drink of choice and a flutter in your heart at 18:40 when we’ll find out together.

  1. Well, you were right. I had a feeling he wasn’t going anyways, because I’d heard he’d been signed on for the 4 specials over the next 2 years.
